Breathing and Health

Every day, about 35,000 pints of blood pass through your lung capillaries in single file, corpuscle by corpuscle, while exposed to oxygen on both surfaces. Your blood absorbs oxygen and releases carbon dioxide from toxic waste matter gathered from your entire system.  Unless you get enough fresh air into your lungs, your blood will not be sufficiently purified or regenerated to maintain optimum health.

Even when we’re exercising hard, only about 50% of the air in our lungs gets expelled when we breath out. Joseph Pilates believed that the air left in our lungs was a “haven for the multiplication of harmful germs,” and sought through his exercises to purge lungs, thus cleansing our systems and purifying the blood.

In Pilates, there can be an lack of understanding of how the body works in relation to the abdominals. and breathing.  Bellybutton to spine is antiquated and not useful.

In Yoga, they speak about “Belly Breathing” – there is confusion in the Yoga world, too.

Breath Work in Pilates

In Pilates exercises, proper breathing helps us lengthen and decompress the spine. The contraction of an exhale can be thought of as a gentle, lengthening squeeze of the trunk around the spine. Then, on the inhale, with the support of the extensor muscles, there is an overall expansion in length and width.
